Scar Revision
The goal of scar revision is to reduce the prominence of a scar by reshaping or removing the scar tissue. By manipulating the scar, its size, shape, and texture can be improved, resulting in less noticeable and more aesthetically pleasing scars.
Am I a good candidate for this procedure?
If you have a scar that is visible, causes discomfort, or impedes with normal movement, you may be a suitable candidate for scar revision. The best way to determine if you should undergo the procedure is to speak to a plastic surgeon who can evaluate your individual needs and medical history.
How is the procedure performed?
Scar revision is typically done with local anesthesia, although general anesthesia may be used in certain cases. The procedure consists of making an incision along the scar and restructuring the underlying tissue to make it less obvious. What type and location of the scar determines which technique will be used.
How long does the procedure usually last?
The procedure can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the extent of the treatment.
How long will I need to remain in the hospital after the procedure?
Scar revision is usually done as an outpatient procedure, so you won’t have to stay in the hospital afterwards. But you may need someone to give you a ride home when the surgery is over, because the effects of anesthesia can take several hours to dissipate.
What is the healing process after surgery?
After the surgery, some swelling and bruising is expected and should resolve in a few days. It’s normal to experience some discomfort as well, which can be managed with appropriate pain medications. Be sure to follow your surgeon’s instructions for caring for the treated area and taking it easy during the recovery period.
Will the procedure leave scars?
Scar revision usually results in leaving a scar at the incision site, but it should be less visible than the original scar – that’s the primary goal of the procedure.
How long before I can return to my normal daily activities?
It’s likely that you’ll be able to return to your usual activities within a few days of the procedure. Be sure to follow your surgeon’s instructions for caring for the treated area and refrain from strenuous activity until you have fully recovered. It can take several weeks or months for the swelling to go down and for the full results of the scar revision to be visible.
